Senate queries approval of N63.5bn contract for Abuja Airport’s 2nd runway

Senate queries approval of N63.5bn contract for Abuja Airport’s 2nd runway

The Senate, yesterday, queried the approval of N63.5 billion for the construction of the second Runway for the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, saying it was an attempt to ‘steal and rape’ Nigerians of the country’s wealth.
The Senate called on the federal government to reduce the unrealistic cost of construction and for the government to monitor the contract award process.

Presenting the motion, Senator Melaye said that the contract for the construction of the runway was previously cancelled by the last administration after allegation of over inflation of contract.

Melaye, said that the contract was awarded by the Federal Executive Council, FEC, at N64 billion after ratification by the Bureau for Public Procurement, BPP, contended that there was also  the need  for the construction of a second runway since, according to him, “the existing one is not only bad but inadequate.”

He said: “The publication that the contract is already undergoing review and to be awarded at N63.5 billion as published by newspapers is another attempt to steal and rape Nigerians of our common patrimony. Further convinced by the fact that the entire Gombe Airport with 36km runway cost of N8.2 billion; Jigawa Airport cost N12 billion, Enugu Airport was constructed and expanded at 13 billion naira and Akwa Ibom Airport at N18.05 billion .
“This astronomical amount is about four times the cost of constructing a brand new airport in Nigeria. As a representative of the people, we must advise that due process  and strict adherence to Public Procurement Act be observed in the said contract of the Second  Abuja  Airport  Runaway. If this not brought to attention of the government now, there may be another fraud in the making, given the comparative analysis of cheaper cost across  the country. “
The Senate President also complained about the cost and said that  there was the need to stop what he described as the reckless expenditures, while awarding contracts in the country.

Deputy involved in throwing student across the room during arrest has been fired

Deputy involved in throwing student across the room during arrest has been fired

Deputy Ben Fields, the police officer involved in a confrontation with an unnamed student at a South Carolina high school on Monday has been relieved of his duties on Wednesday as a result of the incident.
Richland County Sheriff Leon Lott during an interview with CNN said it was unfortunate about the incident but after watching the 3rd video that emerged, they had to let him go.

He said, the Police officer followed protocol until when he threw the girl across the room. He said according to their training and what's acceptable when taking a suspect down, they are required never to let go of a suspect during a confrontation or an arrest but that he violated that rule when he had at the desk and threw her thereby losing contact with her.

Lott also said that the teacher and the Assistant Principal thought what Deputy Fields did was right, he said they both agreed with him but that according to the Police training he didn't follow protocol.

The teacher said the student was on her phone during class and was asked to put her phone away but she refused. The Assistant Principal was called in the matter and repeated the same thing to the girl but again she refused. Then they asked her to leave the class, an instruction which she ignored, so they called in Deputy Fields to take her out of the class. Deputy Fields asked her to get up and leave the class, she ignired him, he repeated the request, again she ignored him and that was when he picked her up and threw her across the room
Lott said:
“When the officer puts his hands on her initially, she reaches up and she pops the officer with her fist.” He did right when he tried to remove her from her desk but broke protocol when he threw her across the room"
He said Deputy Fields was sorry about how he handled the incident and wished he had handled it differently.

Deputy Fields' Lawyer is preparing to fight to have his client reinstated in the force.

Custom officer and wife arrested for buying twin newborn babies for N500,000

Custom officer and wife arrested for buying twin newborn babies for N500,000

An officer of the Nigeria Customs Service simply identified as Azeez and his wife have been arrested by the Ogun State Police for allegedly buying a set of 4 day-old twin babies for N500,000 in the Sango Ota, Ogun state.
According to Punch Metro the couple were arrested by the Sango Police Division last Thursday and the babies have since been recovered from them and the couple  have been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department, Command headquarters in Eleweran, Abeokuta.

A police source said:
“The incident happened last Thursday. The police got a tip-off that the couple had gone to Ibadan, Oyo State, to buy twin babies for N500,000. We then moved in on them and discovered it was true.
The twins were just four days old on the day of the arrest. We have not seen the parents yet.
Azeez said in his statement that he and his wife already had a child together but they had tried to have a second child for 23 years and so they decided to purchase the twins. The suspect told the police that he paid N500, 000 for the babies.

The babies were with the police until Friday, when they were transferred to Abeokuta.

The suspects were taken to the anti-kidnapping section of the SCID. The parents of the babies haven't shown up to claim them but the police said the babies are doing very fine.

The Ogun State Deputy Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Abimbola Oyeyemi, confirmed the arrest. He added that investigations were still ongoing.
He said:
“The arrest is true. The case has been transferred to the SCID, and it is being handled by the Anti-human trafficking department. The suspects are still undergoing investigation. During our investigations, we will get across to the parents and find out the circumstances that led to the disappearance of their babies.
We will also get across to the NCS authorities to show the level of complicity of their officer. I cannot disclose the suspect’s name, because we are still investigating. He was arrested with the wife.

Couple who funded IVF treatment with car boot sales expecting twins

Couple who funded IVF treatment with car boot sales expecting twins

A couple raised £3,000 in six months to pay for IVF by doing 75 car boot sales.
Factory workers Kirsty and Kyle Morgan were devastated when they were unable to conceive after three years of trying. When their only round of NHS-funded IVF failed and they were forced to raise funds themselves.

And after taking part in 75 car boot sales across the city in just six months the full-time workers managed to raise enough for a second round of treatment - and are now expecting their first children.

Kirsty, 27, said: "We went to car boots every weekend, sometimes we did two or three in a weekend.
"At car boot sales items sell for tiny amounts so we knew it would take a long time. "It's been a lot of hard work. Doing the car boot sales felt like we were earning it."
After their first sale in February, strangers listened to their appeal on Facebook and started to donate items for them to sell.

The couple, who have been married for four years, travelled to Athens, Greece, on September 15 for the treatment and got the good news seven days later. They are expecting twins! Big congrats to them!

Injured Deer wanders into hospital Emergency Room

Injured Deer wanders into hospital Emergency Room

Emergency room employees at Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester, New York, were shocked when an injured deer entered the hospital on Monday afternoon.
The deer arrived just as an ambulance crew was taking in a patient, according toTWCNews.com.
The deer managed to get in about 20 feet into the ER before security corralled it, strapped it to a stretcher, and carried it out.
Jim DeFerio said he saw the whole event as he was being wheeled around the hospital hours after having a hearth attack.
He said:
"I turned around and there was a deer I would say about 3 feet high, a small deer, and he ran past me," DeFerio told WHAM TV from his hospital bed. "It ran right by meslipping as it went and everybody kind of moved aside. What are you going to do? You see a deer coming down fast, so everybody moves."

Teresa Hill, an administrator at the Medical Center, said that the deer hit the car that her daughter, Carly, was driving.
The deer "literally popped out of nowhere almost from the cemetery -- and struck her car," Hill said. "It happened right in front of the emergency entrance so she pulled in and got out of the car."
The daughter suffered a sore neck and the car's headlight was broken.
An officer for the Monroe County Animal Control Dept. had to euthanize the deer. Awww...

FG says it needs N233bn to rehabilitate Boko Haram ravaged State

FG says it needs N233bn to rehabilitate Boko Haram ravaged states

Speaking at the opening ceremony of the North-East Humanitarian Multi-Stakeholders Engagement on Tuesday in Maiduguri, the Chairman of the Presidential Committee on North-East Intervention, Gen. Theophilus Danjuma, said N233bn was needed for the reconstruction and rehabilitation of the communities ravaged by the Boko Haram sect.

The chairman of PCNI, who was represented by a member of the committee, Mohammed Danjuma, said the rebuilding of the ravaged states needed proper coordination to alleviate the sufferings of the Internally Displaced Persons.

He said the Federal Government and other stakeholders are determined to manage the humanitarian crisis in the region, adding that the IDPs would return to their communities after the reconstruction of their destroyed communities.

VP Osinbajo said:
“This region has suffered tremendously in the past six years. It has suffered from the destruction of infrastructure, farmlands, businesses, trades, the destruction of schools and the loss of school years.
“Rebuilding, restoring and rehabilitation will cost money and time. But neither money nor time can fix the trauma of loss of family members, relations and friends, the shame of the raped, the scars and fears of parents of the abducted and the kidnapped, the bewilderment that comes with loss of homes, possessions and livelihoods and the pains of hundreds of thousands of orphaned children.”
“The tasks before us are many and profound, to fix brick and mortar and to mend hearts and minds damaged by senseless murderous violence. But we are called not just to mend the hearts and minds of the victims but also of their traducers, and killers.
“The young men and women who have been brainwashed to kill, maim and destroy in the warped belief that by so doing they please God, they are also victims. Indeed, these perpetrators are themselves victims, trapped in the vortex of evil manipulation, compelled to dehumanise themselves as they shed the blood of the innocent.
“It is our duty to deconstruct the narrative that causes men to kill children on their beds at a boarding school at night even as we degrade the military capacity of the insurgents. The tasks are indeed many and profound.
“But while there is still so much to do, much has been done already. The many civil society groups, funding partners, regional and international partners who have given of their time, resources and even their lives in some cases, deserve to be commended. But for you, first responders, we would have been far worse off than we are today.”
He added, “We are in Maiduguri to show humanity and to give milk of human kindness to our brothers and sisters who for six years have been ravaged by Boko Haram insurgency by killing, maiming and abduction of innocent people.”

Man engaged to a woman claims he was drugged and can't remember a thing after video emerges of him having sex with two men

Man engaged to a woman claims he was drugged and can't remember a thing after video emerges of him having sex with two men

A 35 year old professional boxer and father-of-ten Yusaf Mack, whose xrated porn video was put on a gay subscription website claims that he was drugged and does not remember having sex with two men but admits to agreeing to take part in the porn film and getting paid $4,500 for it.Mack who has fought several world champions and is known as the 'Mack Attack', has chosen to speak out and defend his heterosexuality after he was identified as one of the men in the explicit film, which appears to have been online since December 2014.
'My whole life, I've been what they call a whoremonger. I love females,' Mack told Philly.com.
'The only time I touch a man is when I'm in the ring fighting.'
Mack who is engaged to a woman admits that he agreed to take part in a porno because he needed the money.
Mack's saga began earlier this year when omeone reached out to him on Facebook and asked if he would be willing to be in a porn flick. Since he was retired from boxing and short on cash, Mack decided to do it.
Sometime in June,  Mack boarded a train to New York City and made his way to an address in the Bronx. Once inside the apartment where the filming was to take place, he noticed a number of naked women walking around.
"I think, 'It's about to go down.' I needed a drink or something," He said. "They gave me a pill and a shot of vodka. I took the pill down with the vodka."
The next thing he can recall is being on a train at 30th Street Station and someone telling him to wake up.
"I don't remember getting on the train," he said.
But Mack did later notice that he had $4,500 tucked inside his pocket.
He pretty much forgot about the encounter until Oct. 16, when he was on his way to his grandmother's Gold Coast Lounge, at 40th Street and Lancaster Avenue, and noticed people behaving strangely toward him.
"I'm wondering why everybody is walking past me and not speaking to me," Mack told me.
One of his friends pulled him aside and told him about the video snippet, in which Mack's doing all kinds of things and Mack denied that it was him.
"I don't know what y'all are talking about," he told people. "That ain't me. "I don't remember that."
Eventually his friends convinced him it was indeed him on the video. Mack said he had never actually seen it. But he does remember agreeing to do porn and getting on a train to New York City.
Still a ferocious fighter, he wants to go after whoever it was that got him into this predicament, but he said his memory is fuzzy.

A Facebook page that he met his porn contact through is inaccessible because he forgot his password. He has since established another page.
Mack retired in 2014 after losing a six-round bout against Cory Cummings of Newark, N.J., according to thaboxingvoice.com.
Since then, he's tried to forge ahead with his life. He said his goal was to be "a better father to my kids." His children range in age from 3 to 21. Some of them have had questions about the video.
"I'm just hurt right now," he said. "I can't really sleep at night, but I'm getting by. . . . Everybody thinks I'm going to hurt myself. I've got to stay strong for my children."
"All my real friends who really know me, know I like females," Mack added. "I'm still me. You've got to realize that the ones that are not really talking to me are the ones that probably have skeletons in their closets."
Echo Hawk, who manages another boxer's career, said Mack should seize this moment in the spotlight.
"I think he should take advantage of the situation at hand . . . love him or hate him, people are gonna pay to see him so he will get the last laugh," she wrote on Facebook. "I am a Yusaf Mack fan and I will continue to support his career! We all fall as humans, and sometimes as professionals - I'd hope for the same mercy should I ever fall from what the world sees as 'grace.'

Lagos CP says he receives four traffic robbery alerts daily

Lagos CP says he receives four traffic robbery alerts daily

The Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Fatai Owoseni, at a press briefing at the Lagos command headquarters, on Tuesday said he receives about four robbery alerts on his Twitter handle every day and that the police have arrested 144 suspects as a result of constant raids of bridges and other hideouts of the hoodlums.
According to Punch The CP said the robbers mainly disguise as street traders, adding that motorists shouldn't patronise hawkers at night.

He said:
“One of the areas where the government has challenges is the issue of traffic robbery. We will not shy away from the fact that we have had pockets of robbery in traffic in recent times.
“In a day, I receive about four tweets of traffic robbery. I monitor this personally and I give directions and instructions immediately. When I newly came to Lagos, I used to receive about 10 robbery tweets in a day. It is improving now, and it will continue to improve.
“We made arrests in Oworonshoki, Apongbon and Onikan areas last week and there were about 144 suspects. Items recovered from the hoodlums include charms, machetes, locally-made guns and valuables of victims.
“The most recent traffic robbery recorded was carried out by someone selling snacks on the road. So, the message is that motorists should be careful when patronising street traders.”
He added:
“Our enforcement on the ban on commercial motorcycles is ongoing. The challenge with Lagos is that about 500 new motorcycles enter our roads every day. But the police have not stopped enforcing this law.
“We will also start to enforce the law that states that anyone carrying any object defined by the law as a weapon is arrested and charged to court. Therefore, members of the public must be careful.
“As the end of the year draws near, the police reiterate that there will be no use of fireworks, bangers and items that sound like explosives in any part of the state. They are all prohibited.”
